Strengthening Our Voice: FVCDC Leaders Elected to BCACDI Board of Directors

FVCDC is proud to share that Karen Dickenson Smith, Executive Director of the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre, has been re-elected to the Board of Directors for the BC Association for Child Development and Intervention (BCACDI). We are also thrilled to announce the election of David Swankey, Vice-Chair of the FVCDC Board of Directors, who will join Karen in serving on this important provincial leadership body.

About BCACDI

The British Columbia Association for Child Development and Intervention (BCACDI) is a collective of 41 member organizations from across British Columbia and the Yukon, all dedicated to improving outcomes for children and youth with developmental needs and their families. BCACDI advocates at both the community and provincial levels to strengthen supports, improve access to services, and promote policies that prioritize inclusion and early intervention.

The organization’s vision is clear: that all children and youth requiring extra support—and their families—have timely access to the most effective services to help them reach their true potential.

A Shared Commitment to Inclusion and Community Impact

At FVCDC, we share this vision. Our work is grounded in the belief that every child and family deserves the opportunity to thrive in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment. We envision a world where people of all abilities are welcomed to participate meaningfully in family and community life, and we know that achieving this vision takes collaboration, advocacy, and strong leadership.

Karen Dickenson Smith’s re-election reflects her longstanding dedication to child development services and systems-level change across the province. David Swankey’s appointment adds valuable perspective and leadership to the table as a board member who brings deep experience in governance, community building, and inclusive policy.

Looking Ahead

We are honoured to have FVCDC’s leadership contributing to the strategic direction of BCACDI and supporting advocacy that benefits families not just in the Fraser Valley, but throughout British Columbia and the Yukon. By working together with other member agencies, we aim to create healthier, more inclusive communities and ensure that families raising children with developmental disabilities can access the support they need, when they need it.
