The Fraser Valley Child Development Centre (FVCDC) is proud to share that Melissa Buckingham, Infant Development Consultant, has been awarded the 2025 David Bland Memorial Award by the Health Sciences Association (HSA) of BC. This prestigious recognition celebrates Melissa’s outstanding leadership in championing occupational health and safety (OH&S) within her workplace and beyond.
A Commitment to Safety and Advocacy
The David Bland Memorial Award was established in 2007 by the HSA Board of Directors in honour of David Bland, a vocational rehabilitation counsellor who tragically lost his life in 2005. His passing brought national attention to the urgent need to prevent workplace violence in the healthcare sector. In his memory, the award recognizes HSA members who demonstrate exceptional commitment to advancing OH&S practices and making a tangible difference in the lives of their colleagues.
Melissa’s work at FVCDC has gone far beyond her professional role. Her proactive efforts to create a safer, more supportive workplace environment reflect a deep commitment to the wellbeing of her team and the families we serve. Through her leadership, Melissa has helped implement changes that contribute to a culture of safety, inclusion, and mutual respect.
A Well-Deserved Honour
“Melissa’s dedication to occupational health and safety has had a real and lasting impact on our organization,” said Karen Dickenson Smith, CEO of FVCDC. “She leads by example, and her recognition through the David Bland Memorial Award is a reflection of her integrity, care, and vision for a healthier, safer workplace.”
At FVCDC, we believe that staff wellbeing is essential to the quality of care we provide. Melissa’s work not only reinforces this belief—it elevates it. Her advocacy ensures that staff feel empowered, protected, and valued, which in turn supports stronger outcomes for children, youth, and families across the Fraser Valley.
Celebrating Melissa’s Achievement
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Melissa Buckingham for this well-deserved honour. Her courage, dedication, and leadership in workplace safety are a source of pride and inspiration for the entire FVCDC team.
