Getting to Know Us

A Message from Karen McLean, Executive Director, Fraser Valley Child Development Centre

So your child has been referred to the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre (FVCDC). Now what happens?

Before I describe what you can expect on your first visit, I’d like to explain two broad approaches that we take while helping you and your child.

First of all, we believe that you — the parents, caregivers, and families — play the most important role in your child’s development.

You are the best “coach” for your child. Research and experience tells us that the daily interactions you have in your home with your child are as important, if not more important than the early intervention sessions run by professionals like us.

With this in mind, we make the following commitments.

We will:

  • Engage, include, and support you and your family in every aspect of your child’s care.
  • Help you set goals for your child’s development and assist you to meet those goals.
  • Foster and reinforce the strengths and resources that you already have.
  • Offer advice, support, and resources, all the while respecting your values and cultural practices.

We hope that, properly equipped and supported, you will be able to help your child much more than we ever could.

This aim is aptly expressed by early childhood expert Lee Ann Jung (2003).

“By providing strategies to caregivers that allow them to maximize natural learning opportunities in their daily routines and activities, the child has multiple opportunities for intervention across the day, every day, and in contexts that are immediately meaningful to the child and family.”

Secondly, we affirm that no two children or families are the same.

Each one has different needs, skills, challenges, interests, resources, and desired results. It follows that there is no “one way” cookie cutter formula to successfully provide services for each child. Once we have met with you and your child, we will provide a wide range of supports and services tailored to meeting your needs.

Your First Visit to FVCDC

On your first visit, you will meet with a staff member who will listen to your concerns and gather information about you, your child, and your family. Following the visit you will be assigned a Service Coordinator, who will help you identify goals for your child’s growth and development and assist you in reaching them.

The Service Coordinator plays a vital role in ensuring that your child receives the proper treatment. He or she has access to the expertise and resources of a large team of health care professionals, both at FVCDC and in the community. Together you can develop a service plan that works for you and your family — a unique mix of home visits, clinics, groups, individual consultation, and therapy.

As well, while other professionals involved with your child may change over time, depending on needs, priorities, and available resources, the same Service Coordinator will — as much as possible — work with you as long as you are using our services. This means that you can develop a more personal relationship with a professional who understands your needs and concerns and is committed to advocating for you.

We are committed to providing the highest possible standard of service. We look forward to working with you and your child.
